Starting from next academic year, every semester, five students from the School of Civil Engineering, SRM University will be undergoing internship at Metecno India Pvt Ltd, the Chennai-based manufacturers of Sandwich Panels with Polyurethane Core. The company belongs to the Metecno Group, head-quartered at Milan, Italy.
Dr N Sethuraman, Registrar, on behalf of School of Civil Engineering, SRM University and Mr Anup Kumar Dave, Chief Operating Officer, on behalf of Metecno India, had recently signed a MoU for providing internship facilities for SRM students, develop joint research projects and curriculum, train engineers and faculty and offer jobs for SRM students.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Dave said, “This industry-academia initiative will give us manifold benefits especially in terms of research and development and perhaps even trained manpower.”
Explaining about internship facilities for SRM students, Mr Dave said, “We are keen to accept five students as interns every semester and train them in the new technology that we are introducing at our upcoming plant in Sriperumbathur.”
Offering his felicitations on the occasion, Dr T P Ganesan, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Planning and Development), SRM University, said that there are two key problems facing engineering education today. “First, the duration of the course had been cut down by 1 year and thereby effectively snuffing out the training component in the curriculum. Second, the pace of industrial growth had become too fast for the education sector to cope with. Through this MoU, SRM will effectively overcome these two hurdles and extend broader training facilities for students to excel in their career.”
Professor A N Parameswaran, Dean (IIIC), Professor Muthemchelvam, Associate Director, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Dr M Lakshmipathy, Dean, School of Civil Engineering, and Professor K S Satyanarayanan, School of Civil Engineering were present on the occasion.
